There were actually four stations with the name Avonmouth in the name (Avonmouth,
Avonmouth Dock, Avonmouth Docks & Royal Edward) but only one remains, the one
originally called Avonmouth Dock. This the second station built, in 1877 but was rebuilt
with a double track in 1885. Even this was not enough and in the 1920s it was rebuilt to
cope with the increasing number of passengers. These have now left but both tracks are
still in use, though the former railway buildings have now found other uses.
Some trains continue on to St. Andrews Road and Severn Beach whilst for some trains
this is the end of the line and you have to catch a bus (or walk) if you want to go any
further. Walking is not really recommended as you have to walk along a heavily trafficed
main road. Of course it is possible to walk along the railway track without any major risk
of being run over, but that is probably highly illegal. The track crosses Gloucester Road
directly after the station and the automatic barriers still work as can be seen here.
