Shirehampton station opened in March 1865, then, as now, with a single track and platform. It was substantially rebuilt in 1903 when the line to Avonmouth was doubletracked, and as recently as 1958 there were still five people employed there. Now there are no staff and not much in the way of buildings either.

There are still passengers though and it is one of the busier stations on the line during the day.
